THE COUSINS GO TO THE ZOO

[Keep your eyes on this site -- more pictures have yet to come out of the cameras! In particular, we are going to add in pictures of the three completed game posters in a format that will let you zoom in to see what everything is.]

GETTING READY

For the Fall 1998 Cousins Party, we decided to try to bring the family to the Bronx Zoo for a day of fun and games. So, we sent off a warm and inviting letter. As you can see in the letter, "Cousin" includes Jay's first cousins and siblings, Shoshana's first cousins and siblings, and certain of Shoshana's extended cousins who live in the greater NY area.

THE SCHEDULE, THE GAME AND THE RULES

(We know that a few typos found their way into some of the materials we sent out. While we apologize, we do NOT want to hear about it from those of you out there who like to tell people about typos. We know who you are, and we know we sometimes do it to you, but please refrain this time. Also, we know that the date changed -- everyone knows the date changed. This has been a message from your friendly neighborhood webmastre, who made this text light on purpose.)

It wouldn't be an outing organized by a member of the Davids family (that would be Shoshana's family) if there weren't detailed lists, rules and regulations. All in the spirit of good fun, of course.

The inspiration for all of this came when Jay and Shoshana went with Hideo Iketani, a friend from Japan, to the Zoo earlier in the summer. As you can see, we had such a good time, we thought it would be fun to share with family and lots of children.

After everyone gathered in the Lakeside Cafe, the fun began. A lot of the family went together to ride the monorail through Asia, and started on their scavenger hunt/retrieval game. Thanks to Aviva and Resa Davids (Shoshana's sister and mom) for their help in putting together the Game Rules, Please Retrieve List, and Questions. Thanks to the family for giving Shoshana the attributes of the beautiful flamingo and macaw, while considering the zebra and elephant to best represent Jay!!

DESSERT AND RESULTS

When everyone gathered again in the later afternoon for dessert, the families (to the extent they were awake) were grouped into 3 teams to put together poster presentations of their booty from the zoo and perform their zoo advertisements. The creativity was unbelievable.

Two different teams saw the same very hairy man while they were wandering the zoo, and took pictures of him as the "hairiest animal." Millipedes are the smallest animal in the zoo, and apparently the Gibon Monkey is the loudest. Bonus points went to, among others, the team that identified the stone rhino at the zoo center as the heaviest animal in the zoo. We still don't know the true story about the maintenance men, but we understand the zoo is not pressing trespassing charges against anyone.

To the tune of Old McDonald:

Old Giuliani has a zoo, eieio. It's in the Bronx, real close to you, eieio.

With a giraffe here, and a monkey there. Here a bird, there a snake, alligators in the lake.

Old Giuliani has a zoo, eieio. It's full of things to see and do, eieio.

You can ride a camel, you can touch a seal, you can thrill your kids and make them squeal.

Old Giuliani has a zoo, eieio. Everything's here except for you, eieio.

So grab your camera and come on down. It's the greatest show in town.

Old Giuliani has a zoo, eieio.

We look forward to seeing everyone at the next planned event, which probably will be in the late spring.
